TINA HUBER

I am a basket maker based near the Somerset/Wiltshire border – my designs are rooted in  traditional methods of basketmaking and woven with a contemporary twist and consideration for use and purpose – be that for storing, foraging or carrying.

I weave baskets with locally sourced Somerset willow and often compliment them with other native materials such as rush, hazel, willow bark and iris leaves - all of which are sustainably grown and harvested. It is deeply satisfying to know that what I create will, after a long life of use, return to the ground causing no harm to the environment.

With a background in Design and teaching craft-related subjects the desire to make and understand the ‘engineering’ behind how things are made is a huge part of who I am. Sharing my passion for making and passing my creative skills on to others has been the highlight of my career – be that for basketry, sewing, knitting socks or silverwork.

Practicing for more than a decade, I recently completed a two-year Level 3 City & Guilds course in Basketry at Westhope College in Shropshire, for which I received the Joy Viall Award for Excellence – a great honour!

Weaving, of all crafts, is my greatest passion – gathering natural materials to transform them into objects of purpose and beauty whilst continuing a craft that has been around for more than 10,000 years – well, it’s just mind-blowingly exciting!
